Should Warriors fans just root for the wall?
[+notes/quotes/video from G3 Warriors-Lakers + day off + morning shootaround]
People sometimes ask me what my favorite memory is of covering the the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena (note: I started in 2009, after the #WeBelieve era). No, it’s not the 35-foot haymakers Stephen Curry threw up as former SF Examiner beatwriter Drew Morita, sitting next to me, would clutch my forearm as we braced for the roof the blow off and the roller-coaster-like vibration of the building.
I’m a contrarian, so I pick the thing that nobody else remembers, the thing that stuck in my mind as a nuance of the game that flies below the radar: how in May of 2013 the Dubs’ frontcourt of Draymond Green, Festus Ezeli and Harrison Barnes (I’m sure I left out some names) chased down after every loose ball like their lives depended on it, every six games of that Denver Nuggets opening series.
Ten years later, and not to pick on Draymond only because Festus and HB are now gone, I get that it’s harder for guys to chase down loose balls. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are gonna have a harder time locking in. The next generation of young Warriors just isn’t as blue-collar as the “Goon Squad” types we had before the dynasty.
So when the team lays an egg, my refractory period of frustration gets gradually smaller and turns into a shrug quicker. My theory is when you’re older, you tend to want to get away with as efficient a win as you can, although I’m not sure I’ve seen this at any other level. Hard to find teams that have been on top for so long, then faced sudden parity, as not even the legendary SF Associates of the NorCal Japanese League experienced this (search this site on “Japanese League” for more, as I’ve referenced it in past articles).
The only problem: this era of the NBA is much more competitive. So far, the Sacramento Kings and LA Lakers series feel like Western Conference Finals (WCF) matchups.
And so you get the SplashBrothers ditching the “tiki-taka” philosophy on offense in a Game 3 that they technically can afford to lose, and they try to demoralize the opposition with their three-point shot-making. Unfortunately, not reacting to and getting discouraged by the beginning indications of those flurries has literally become a staple of every defensive game plan against them over the years. The opposition is up to the task.
Thus, the only times that “championship DNA” is exuded is when their backs are against the wall. Whether that’s a must-win regular season game in the 4th quarter against the New Orleans Pelicans, Game 4 on the road versus the Boston Celtics, or Games 3 and 7 against the Kings, Game 4 in LA tonight should be one of those instances.
“All the things we say after a loss,” as Curry put it postgame after the Game 3 embarrassment, “We gotta show it again.”
If the Warriors survive this series, I’m going to just shrug my way through opening games of the WCF until their backs are against the wall again. Then I’m going to lean in and observe greatness, and pretend I’m sitting next to Morita all over again.
With the Game 3 loss, I’ll keep that buried below — although the behind-the-scenes aka “BTS” video does contain unique sightings of Hollywood celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Woody Harrelson — and just list everything below in chronological order, starting with morning shootaround today (which includes Draymond signing autographs) and media availability at the team hotel yesterday on the off-day…

DISCLAIMER: These are all just notes for my main workflow of YouTube videos, mostly transcribed by me shortly after the interviews and during my coverage of postgame on our livestreams (!). Sometimes I’ll just use what’s tweeted by beatwriters, as listed. The links to the tweets are not available because sometimes I don’t use the full tweet and just having a ton of tweets on this website imo isn’t aesthetically pleasing and gets away from the main goal: transferring information (not so much entertainment) to the brains of DubNation asap.
• Donte DiVincenzo after morning shootaround before Game 4, on how he would describe this series: “Challenging. Postseason is all about adjustments, all about matchups… almost all of them were together last year… trust… everybody knows the stars are gonna play high minutes… hold it down when they’re getting their rest… more of a halfcourt game.”
• On any adjustments vs executing: “…control what we can control which is our effort and hitting them first.”
• On what championship DNA is: “…you can tell which games we haven’t been locked in… attention to detail… practice, film… preparation.”
• On Game 4 tonight: “…We’re ready to respond today.”
• On what’s impressed him about the core vets: “Never too high, never too low… Every game is not gonna be as ugly as it was the other night… watching them… easy to follow suit.”
• On applying previous experiences: “A lot of it is to the younger guys. In a weird way we’re learning together… at the end of the day we just want to win.”
• On getting Poole going: “Jordan is Jordan… When you have somebody like Klay… Steph… to look up to… We can’t ask him to be anything other than who he is… our confidence level in him is high.”
• On what he needs to do: “Being more assertive and aggressive…. get everybody involved… easy shots.”
• On what it’s like to be in a Lakers series: “you dream of it as a kid… Coach Darvin Ham was an assistant in Milwaukee… extremely blessed to be at this stage.”
• On a must-win: “…it takes a notch up in the playoffs… four losses and you go home… did you help the team win?… you may have shot 1-for-10. Doesn’t matter.”
• Stephen Curry media availability, day before Game 4, on any different message at the film session: “…just a normal session… adjusting to their adjustments… frustrating knowing how the first half went… the go on a huge run and get their crowd into it… every possession matters. Just a reminder of that… You let that momentum evaporate… a lot of confidence we can do it.”
• On what happened in that 2nd quarter: “Turnovers… they got to the free throw line too much and that just changed the vibe… On the road… trickle down effect to literally everything… their confidence… reminder of how important that is to win on the road at this level… (Lakers in a) comfort zone… pace… Hate to keep learning that lesson all season.”
• On Jordan Poole: “From game to game… report card… how he feels… We’re feeling extremely confident… keeping it positive… great energy and making our missing shots are gonna happen… other things you can do… you’ll get rewarded in the big picture.”
• On his increased strength over the years: “Handling defenses… the matchups… and just not getting tired.”
• On the starting five and their best overall rating: “…experiment a little bit… Defensively that’s our best lineup… The value of Loon… he accepts all the responsibility… that’s what we love about him… It changes quickly because teams make adjustments…”
• On a moment when they feel they can do anything: “There’s been a lot of them… Memphis… Houston in ‘17 and ‘18… Boston… on the road kind of against the ropes… different against this team.”
• On the officiating: “Try not to get distracted by… they are number one in the league, we were number thirty (in free throw attempts)… can’t ever let it be a distraction… mad as you want to get about it… still had a chance to win the game… block it out… we’re talented enough… good feeling if we do.”
• On Gary Payton II’s reduced role: “Just the way that were constructed… GP’s gone through it, Loon… young guys… the way that he sees the game… level of maturity… when he’s out there he performs… never getting frustrated with playing time… Everybody wants to be out there… different combinations.”
• On taking 14 shots vs 12 shots in Game 2: “…we’ll make adjustments.”
• On defensive issues after watching the film: “…connecting the game… we were a little chaotic in terms of our spacing… turnovers… fueled their transition offense… free throw line… slowed the game down… You don’t want D’Lo going crazy… kept them afloat… they got a lot more comfortable… dictated the game.”
• Kevon Looney media availability at team hotel, day before Game 4, on what he saw from the film session: “Just to stay more poised... continue to play our style... just execute our game plan...”
• On the breakdowns in the second quarter of Game 3: “We just gotta be more disciplined... The last two or three years, fouling to much... We know that...”
• On the free throw discrepancy: “It's been like that since I've been here. Add a player you always think that you're getting fouls... give to much attention to the refs... lose focus.”
• On attacking the rim: “...Continue to play our game .. we shoot a lot of threes... anyways... play our style.”
• On if he surprised they played so poorly: “Not surprised. We've been having ups and downs like that all year... last game just kinda let it get out of control...”
• On Gary Payton II being out of the rotation: “...rotation had been changing game to game... changes on this team...”
• On this series; “It's fun... Steph, LeBron and all the hype... energy... both fan bases are great... real intense…”
• Steve Kerr media availability at team hotel, day before Game 4, on anything they learned after watching the tape: “You always learn stuff watching the tape… spacing issues… we didn’t learn a whole lot… confirmed by the tape.”
• On if Reaves matching up on Steph changed anything: “…they were just much better defensively… we hurt them in the pocket in Game 2… brought much force and energy… deflections, caused more disjointed possessions… with that said we got an 11-point lead. I didn’t think there was a great mystery to the game… we sort of lost our poise… confirmed on film.”
• On the fouling: “Everybody teaches the importance of not fouling and not teaching and going vertical. Anthony Davis is a great rim protection and he does a good job of not teaching… DNA as a team… big, they’re physical… they started going to the line because they were found in transition… LeBron going downhill on you.”
• On the referees: “We didn’t lose the game because of the officials so there’s no point in winning… our performance.”
• On Gary Payton II: “Game 2 we went more with Donte and Moses… Gary is more a guy you can stick on a player… Last two games we’ve gone in a different direction.”
• On Game 4 being a “must-win” game: “You know my feelings on that expression… i have faith that our team can win… Boston down 2-1 in the road…”
• On attacking Anthony Davis: “There are definitely times when we can gain an advantage and challenge him… understand spacing and the importance of the extra pass… if you’re not making the defense move you’re not gaining an advantage… Davis…”
• On Steph Curry’s strength: “He’s so much stronger than he was even five or six years ago… shows up more in defense… finish better at the rim,.. wristband contract and stay on balance… two time MVP continues to add to his game.”
• On when he knew this team can overcome playoff deficits: “Idk that there was one moment, it’s the body of work… Finals six times… matchups, different challenges… embracing…”
• On if he’s told them they can lose the series (and having appropriate fear): “I hope there’s an awareness of that… Not anything that I’m harping on. It’s all just part of competition. The challenge is go be our best.”
• On it it’s surprising the vets played the way they did: “Yeah… we were in pretty good control of the game… then the fouls and the turnovers and some rushed possession kind of came all at once…”
• On if he’s ever seen a quarter by this team where they had turnovers, flagrant fouls and technicals: “Probably (smirks). I can’t think of any right now.”
• On if garbage time for guys like Kuminga matter: “Yeah. Everything matters. The whole group in Game 2 was great… Last night the entire team… didn’t feel like we were ourselves… everybody… one-pass possessions… we gotta get better.”
• On the process of watching game film: “Just being honest… collaboration… it’s never us walking in there and us saying do this or else… Here are our thoughts. Let’s hear your thoughts.”
• On Draymond’s defense: “Draymond is strong enough to keep bigger guys away from the hoop… quick enough… Unique… plays a lot bigger than he is… speed… Strength… length… 7’1 wingspan.”
• On Poole: “I have great faith in Jordan… He knows and we know that he can do it… The whole group.. rushed possessions… Steph… Draymond… Klay… It’s really the whole group.”
• On any issues with guys’ roles: “Nobody has said anything about being frustrated with playing time.”
• Klay Thompson postgame on Q2: “The turnovers and our fouling. That’s one me, playoff career-high 6 turnovers… 37 times is way too many (Laker FTs)… being sure with the ball and not fouling.”
• On his turnovers: “I just made errant passes… wasn’t making the shape crisp passes… film… respond.”
• On the turnover with Steph: “That was my fault, I should’ve sprinted to the rim… I’ll just be much better Monday.”
• On playing his first playoff game at Crypto: “…awesome thing to do… I don’t take for granted… looking forward to a bounce-back performance. This one stings but we don’t have a lot of time to dwell on it.”
• On reconciling how they played in G2 vs G3: “At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if you lost by 30 or 1 because it’s still 2-1… we’ve been through more adversity… ten years here.”
• On regaining composure in a game: “Shoot, just being mentally tougher and coming together as a team rather than splintering… we are a very tough team and we got punked tonight, unfortunately… watch the film, dissect it and be better.”
• On heading into Game 3: “Play with our hands back, stay in our feet and contest without fouling. Yeah, do those three things.”
• Stephen Curry postgame Game 3, on the 2nd quarter: “…especially on the road… when the game stops it’s not in our favor… understand momentum… two different styles of play… there’s a turnover where me and Klay had a miscommunication… then a barrage of whistles… we gotta respond.”
• On momentum and tendencies from one game to the next: “…especially because of how drastically different we play…”
• On Reaves with Vanderbilt lurking: “…I knew they were not gonna trap and let us get 4-on-3… gotta shoot the ball better as a team… connecting the game issue for us… it always is for us…”
• On navigating through: “…not get distracted by stuff that you can’t control… test that every team has to go through… all the things we always say after a loss…”
• On not looking happy on the turnover with Klay: “…making a read for somebody else. Cardinal sin for a point guard… frustrated by the fact that I threw because I saw the whole thing from start to finish.”
• On getting to the next level: “How many series have we been in?… a lot of different scenarios… we’ve responded… sit up here with a lot of confidence… just gotta go do it… that’s the beauty of a series… throw this one in the garbage… get the game at our pace and our speed. We’ve shown we can do it. We gotta show it again.”
• On how to stop the game from spiraling out of control: “We struggled more this year for sure because of — for whatever reason… whole tone of the game changes… not a good feeling when you’re trying to just settle in… last series proved that we could figure it out and overcome those challenges. Unfortunately we gotta do it again… not ideal in terms [transmission cuts out].”
• Draymond Green postgame on what happened: “The game stopped. They were on the FT line every time.”
• “It is what it is… it don’t matter.”
• On having the fouls pile up: “Frustrating.”
• On any lesson learned: “Yeah. Play better.”
• On playing solid defense: “…maybe they’ll call it, maybe they won’t.”
• On not regaining the composure: “Idk, the game is still going on… figure it out as you go.”
• On Game 1 similarity: “I think it’s pretty similar.”
• On block vs charge: “You don’t really get explanations these days. I won’t adapt, I’ll keep playing the same defense for the last seven years.”
• On if he can talk to the refs: “Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t.”
• On Reaves FA Steph: “We were getting what we wanted, then the game stopped.”
• On if they can get more whistles for them: “Idk, I think we’re going to the rim. Idk.”
• Steve Kerr postgame Game 3, on Q2: “We had a lot of turnovers… taking quick shots… fed into their transition… that’s when the game changed.”
• On the energy: “…mid-2nd quarter… lost our poise… four technicals in the first half, 12 turnovers… gotta be more poised.”
• On what makes it hard to regain the poise: “Tough environment… easier in the regular season… everything is magnified in the playoffs… a bad stretch can turn into a longer stretch against a team like the Lakers… great players… let our foot off the gas… they dominated the game.”
• On Reaves guarding Steph: “Just tough night for everybody… 25 assists and 19 turnovers… turned into 27 points… shot 20 more free throws than we did… this was a Laker game, dominating from the foul line and getting out in transition… they controlled it.”
• On Klay: “all of our guys were in a rush…”
• On what the locker room was like: “Everybody’s obviously down… nobody’s happy.”
• On the see saw between games: “Very confident in our abilities to bounce back.”
• On the challenges of the Draymond fouls: “…when we challenged I think it was Draymond’s fourth foul. Block charges are tough to get generally.”

Stephen Curry + Klay 💦 pregame wokout before Game 3 Golden State Warriors at LA Lakers:
• Steve Kerr pregame Game 3, on defending without fouling but Lakers are good at FT disparity: “We were definitely the aggressor (in Game 2)… you tend to get the benefit of the doubt from the officials… playing hard, playing fast… force… energy…”
• On the venue change, playing differently at home vs away: “You always talk about adjustments and possible adjustments the other team will make… biggest add time t the Lakers will make is just how hard they will play… most important factor in today’s game…force and our energy to match that and exceed it.”
• On Looney: “Yeah he’s feeling a lot better… no, I’m not gonna tell you who’s starting.”
• On Iguodala: “He’s been on the court the last few days… ball handling and defensive slides… closer…”
• On Russell: “Great shooter and passer… he came to partner with Steph, remember Klay got hurt and then Steph got injured… wasn’t fair… I enjoyed coaching him… really high IQ player, you can see that in this series… trade we made was good for both parties… shore up our wing defenders…”
• On Wiggins: “He got his conditioning back pretty quickly… a couple games… 35 minutes which is pretty incredible… rhythm is still coming… up and down with his shooting… 5 or 6 threes and we know that’s coming… last game… +35… defend and rebound and play with force… match…”
• Darvin Ham pregame Game 3, on LeBron and AD talking about defense after G2. “Everything starts with transition defense… usually the first sign… focus and an edge and a competitiveness…”
• On the GSW threes: “…in transition, being better on the ball. We have some adjustments… communicating… multiple efforts… they do a great job on the offensive glass… three ball going up… gang rebound… hold them to one possession.”
• On who the pressure is on: “… Pressure? Idk, it’s basketball… Jeanie, Rob… put our best foot forward.”
• On D’Lo: “…communicator… really good natural basketball player… sky’s the limit on his IQ… up there with other high IQ ball players… communication has been at a really high level… amazing job embracing and internalizing a lot of things we threw at him on both sides of the ball.”
• On maintaining free throw disparity since his days with Bucks: “The free throw line is a huge, huge component… it’s a system that I helped build in other places. We have drills that we do… film… numbers… showing our hands, knowing how tightly the game is called… hand placement… we work feverishly on showing our hands… contesting at the rim in verticality drills, on-ball drills… loving and living in the paint (on defense)… not getting discouraged… constantly exploiting… attacking the paint.”
• On Wiggins on D: “long, wiry, athletic player… he’s smart… avoiding screens at the point of the screen… doesn’t go for a lot of pump fakes… attack him and not try to have any decision… play with a pace… catch them with some awkward positions.”
• On Draymond vs AD: “Just to feed him the ball relentlessly… I can’t give out details, I’m sorry.”
