Steph Curry’s ACC Thursday at Edgewood: Our Favorite Eight 📸 ⛳️
Inside the ropes with Steph Curry at the American Century Championship
Every summer, one of my favorite traditions begins the same way. Thursday at Edgewood isn’t quite tournament golf yet, the pressure hasn’t fully arrived, the galleries are a little smaller.
One Wardell Stephen Curry II has a little more time to interact with fans. And for us, it’s often the best day to simply observe. While I’m outside the ropes filming video and covering the media sessions, Bianca Rhodes of B.Marie Photography is inside the ropes looking for the moments television usually misses.
These are her favorite eight photographs from Thursday’s practice round.
One of the moments that stood out happened near the 18th tee. A young fan handed Curry a custom Davidson Wildcats No. 30 sombrero. Steph later wore it during his walk to the tee and even mentioned it during his post-practice media session:
A kid gave me a nice Davidson Wildcat No. 30 custom sombrero… You never know what’s gonna happen on that walk.
We managed to capture both the celebration after a great shot while Steph was wearing the sombrero and a quieter moment showing the fan who made it.
It’s those little stories that make this tournament different.
The other memorable part of the day happened inside the media room.
I happened to be sitting next to Anthony Slater of ESPN, with whom I was on the daily Warriors beat for about seven years (!) as he asked Steph the opening questions about LeBron James — questions that quickly became one of the day’s biggest NBA stories.
Instead of zooming tightly on Steph, I pulled my camera back so viewers could see a little of the reporting process itself: a veteran beat writer asking the question, recording the answer, and preparing the clip that would soon spread across social media:
Sometimes the story behind the story is just as interesting. For me, that’s what makes covering the American Century Championship so enjoyable year after year.
The golf is great. The scenery is spectacular, but it’s the human moments — between shots, between interviews, and between headlines — that keep bringing us back.
Tomorrow we’ll be back at Edgewood with more behind-the-scenes coverage from South Lake Tahoe.
