The Golden State Warriors had their first practice today. Before Steve Kerr, Kevon Looney and Donte DiVincenzo took the podium, James Wiseman battled Kevon Looney in the post, Andrew Wiggins smashed the rim on a post move drill move, Jonathan Kuminga also soared in for a hammer and, of course, Stephen Curry splashed. The team also scrimmaged during practice, which is covered in the quotes below. Here are the videos:
DISCLAIMER: These are all just notes for my main workflow of YouTube videos, tweeted by beatwriters. I used to transcribe every interview but it became too tedious and not worth the investment for the small amount of views we got on the soundbites on YouTube. The links to the tweets are not available because sometimes I don’t use the full tweet and just having a ton of tweets on this website imo isn’t aesthetically pleasing and gets away from the main goal: transferring information (not so much entertainment) asap.
KERR NOTES & QUOTES
• Kerr says today was a “heavy load” practice day, but the team will dial back the intensity tomorrow in preparation for Japan. On the Warriors' first practice: “The group that just won the title a few months ago basically dominated the practice, as they should.” Mentioned both Draymond Green and Kevon Looney as having great practices. (Kendra Andrews, CJ Holmes, Connor Letourneau, Anthony Slater)
• Andre Iguodala wasn't at training camp today and won't be here tomorrow. The plan is for him to be back for Monday's practice. Had some previously scheduled obligations: “He was planning on retirement, this was sort of a last-minute decision that he made…His presence is going to mean the world to us. We have so many young guys that the more mentoring and coaching from within our team the better...We need Andre on the court and in the locker room. I‘ve always felt that internal leadership is really one of the keys to getting a great team…I think it'll be similar to last year. When he is right physically and able to play, then he'll be playing. He can still play. He showed that last year.” (Dalton Johnson, Connor Letourneau, John Dickinson, Kendra Andrews, Madeline Kenney, Mark Haynes)
• On Draymond's conditioning on Day 1 of training camp: “His conditioning looks good and his body looks good. He’s really moving well.” (John Dickinson)
LOONEY NOTES & QUOTES
• Looney on Wiseman: “Super athletic and strong as hell…He's been taking a lot of jumps since Summer League and now it's training camp. It's good to see…We just wanna go out there and compete and prove we can be one of the best tandems at the position in the league.” (Dalton Johnson, John Dickinson)
• The championship vets dominated practice: “Steph and Wiggs made a lot of shots today.” (John Dickinson)
• “I've been really impressed by Ryan Rollins.” Also mentioned Moody, Kuminga and Pat Spencer. (Dalton Johnson, me)
• Looney said he had some other suitors in free agency who were close to what the Warriors offered but not enough to pull him away from the team that drafted him. “This is the final place I just really wanted to be.” (Madeline Kenney)
DDV NOTES & QUOTES
• Donte DiVincenzo on joining Warriors: “I’m having fun coming back to work every day.” (John Dickinson)
• DiVincenzo has been impressed by Moses Moody: “I think his IQ is really high. We’ve been pushing each other.” (John Dickinson)
• Raved about how Draymond controls the room and called his energy and leadership “contagious.” (Dalton Johnson)
• On why he picked Warriors over other teams in free agency: “I was in a place where I wanted to get back to winning culture, the joy of playing simple, winning basketball. I think I thrive on that.” (John Dickinson)
👍👍💛💙
Nice to see James Wiseman working on a hook shot... even if just the "baby hook".
Any Baldwin or Rollins sightings?
