DubNation Digest: from Stephen Curry local to Klay at Chase to Nico in Germany
Where in the world the Warriors are right now
I’m trying to post these updates on the off-season whereabouts of various Warriors players more often, like daily even, as there’s usually enough content to go around, believe it or not!
If you’re on our Discord (sign up here for $1/mo until we turn on $5/mo subs on here), you already know this. And, no, we’ve consciously decided not to post these on Twitter or Instagram due to the ridiculous outrage on there. People are so mad on those platforms and these posts are for PVO folks, sorry! #notsorry
But the NBA Draft Combine has started and we’re already backlogged with nine (!) Zoom Q&As starting with Scottie Barnes on deck — video already posted here — so hopefully the next DubNation Digest, something I’ve tried to make a regular thing many times, will arrive earlier than next week. We’ll see.
So here’s what the Dubs have been up to. Again, all of this is available real-time with video and pictures instead of in this digest written-out format on this website, on our Discord server.
The following is updated since the NBA Draft Lottery, which we enjoyed live with the likes of Festus Ezeli and Ian Clark this past Tuesday, and marked the relaunch of this website:
Rocco (Klay Thompson’s dog) joined Rick Welts as a lucky charm. I guess it worked. We didn’t drop from our most probable finish of both the 7th and 14th picks. Good job, Rocco! 👏
Kent Bazemore joined Michelle Wie (officially a Warrior by marriage to Golden State’s assistant general manager Jonnie West) for a practice round at the KPMG LPGA tour stop at Highlands Course in Atlanta, where Baze stills owns a home.
Shylyn Gibson posted another “cute couple” pic of her and Kelly Oubre, who will be a father soon (more details soon!). They are vacationing in Monaco.
Klay posted pics of him shooting around on Chase Center’s main court with Warriors assistant coaches Chris DeMarco and Seth Cooper. Klay’s trainer Chris Torres hopped on our NBA Draft Lottery livestream and told us Klay had called him to say he was jogging already, which Torres thought was ahead of schedule (more on this soon on this website, as well!).
Draymond Green is in LA with family at his off-season residence. He’s set to join Team USA for training camp starting on July 6th. Only the top print media will be allowed to cover the team (i.e., I will not be in Vegas for this although I’ve been credentialed with USA Basketball since 2010).
Nico Mannion was in Germany for an exhibition tournament for Team Italy. They are now in Belgrade for the Olympic qualifying tournament. Mannion had begun training camp as Italy’s Sixth Man but then got a start and scored 14 points. I haven’t checked back since to see if he’s still expected to start, but will keep you posted.
If you guessed Bob Portman as the fourth Warrior other than Chris Mullin, Stephen Curry and Harrison Barnes to be drafted as the 7th overall pick, you win! Did you know, one of the Warriors’ eight 14th picks was Kobe Bryant’s dad? Other notable 14th picks by the Dubs were Lester Conner, Tim Hardaway, Troy Murphy and Anthony Randolph.
Steph relaunched his Underrated Tour (more details coming soon here):
Curry also did a Google Local video spot with Antoine Tang of Antoine’s Cookie Shop in Palo Alto. More on this coming soon, as well.
From Marc Stein, who tweeted today that he’s left the NY Times to start his own “The Stein Line” Substack site as well. Nice choice of platform, Marc! He also wrote in his last NYT newsletter something that might interest “OG” DubNation:
“The Los Angeles Clippers’ Terance Mann scored 39 points in a series-clinching victory over Utah, becoming just the sixth player in league history, in his first or second N.B.A. season, to reach that total in a Game 6 or a Game 7. The other six (Rick Barry twice, Dave Bing, Magic Johnson, Bob McAdoo and George Mikan), as listed here by Stathead, are all in the Hall of Fame. Mann scored only 25 points combined through the first five games of the Utah series and had 9 points in the Clippers’ Game 1 loss at Phoenix in the conference finals.”
An interview with Joe Lacob by Tim Kawakami was posted on TheAthletic. More details coming soon on this as well.
Juan Toscano-Anderson and Jarron Collins were interviewed on a Marc Spears’ Undefeated podcast. I haven’t gotten around to listening to it, but Juan T. is obviously one of my heroes.
Not only is Steve Kerr with Bob Myers at the Draft Combine in Chicago, but Nick U’Ren was caught on camera by ESPN sharing some snack-size peanuts with Steve 😂 Y’all brought hand sanitizer, I hope?!
Warriors TV finally posted their jumbotron segment on Oubre and his background with his dad for Father’s Day, on the official GSW YouTube channel. It’s actually a superb video, if you’ve ever seen it.
James Wiseman posted an IG stories ad for Beats By Dre. Always good to see young fella. He also went live on Instagram twice, but both were somewhat “fails” as he ended them shortly. On the first one, he said, “Y’all are boring,” after not getting any good questions in the comments, abruptly logging off.
After what seemed to be an epic vacation to Dubai (we’ll do a video report on this soon, hopefully, as there are tons of visuals), Kevon Looney posted another IG ad for FitAid drink, and we noticed for the first time he actually has a tattoo on his ankle.
Mike Brown is coaching Team Nigeria at both the old Warriors practice facility in Oakland and Lake Merritt College. He’s given jobs to at least a couple of ex-Warriors assistants, Luke Loucks and Roger Sancho. Again, check out our YouTube Live with Festus, who actually logged onto our Zoom call from the Rakuten practice facility.
Did I miss anything since this past Tuesday?
Notice how we don’t have any of the clickbait “entertainment” posts suggesting the Cavs would actually trade their No. 3 pick (it’s not logical for them to do that), or that Ben Simmons is a trade target (based on Stephen A. Smith needing to say something juicy on TV?), or Lacob re-educating the public on how the salary cap works (please go peruse cap tables for your own edification; there’s only 30 of them!).
Let me know if I missed any information in the comments…
